Yes, Mark, I tend you use just a handline off a plastic spool. Don't really have room for a pole in my pack, and don't trust the strength of telescopic ones. The places I get into are so remote that there is no shortage of fish, and no competition from other fishermen, so a handline works fine.

Very interesting. I think I read that you don't use fishing poles on these rivers? Just a line?
